Welcome to Temporary Residency in Canada
Canada warmly welcomes over 35 million temporary residents each year. If you’re not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you’ll need permission to enter Canada as a visitor.
Do You Need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)?
Visitors, temporary foreign workers, and international students from non-visa-exempt countries must apply for and be granted a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). Find out if you need a TRV before your departure and contact us.
Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for Visa-Exempt Countries
Citizens of visa-exempt countries traveling to Canada by air must apply for an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before departure. U.S. citizens do not need a TRV or an eTA, while U.S. Green Card holders need an eTA regardless of nationality.
Understanding the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)
A TRV is issued by a Canadian Immigration Visa Office outside Canada, confirming that the holder meets the admission requirements as a visitor. TRVs can be for single or multiple entries. Typically, tourists are admitted for six months, while temporary foreign workers and international students are admitted for varying periods, as determined case-by-case. Extensions can be applied for from within Canada.
Entry at the Canadian Port of Entry
Possessing a valid TRV does not guarantee entry into Canada. At the Port of Entry, visitors must prove their visit is temporary. Officers will deny entry to those who they believe do not intend to leave Canada after their visit.
Important Notes
-
Medical Examination: Some visitors may need a medical exam, especially those who visited certain countries or intend to work in specific occupations.
-
Criminality and Medical Issues: These can prevent entry into Canada.
-
Financial Support: Visitors must prove they can support themselves during their stay.
-
Biometric Information: Citizens of certain countries may need to provide biometrics.
