Canadian Citizenship Application Process
Here, you can have several steps to follow and apply for Canadian citizenship, only if you meet the eligibility criteria:
1. Submit Your Application
Step 1 involves completing your application and sending it to the designated IRCC office for review. Once the review is done, you will receive a notice to write the citizenship test which leads to the second step of your application.
2. Citizenship Test
Individuals in the age group 18 to 54 must write a citizenship test, that evaluates knowledge of Canadian history, geography, the political system, rights and responsibilities of all its citizens. The IRCC offers a study guide called "A Look at Canada." The test consists of around 20 questions, with a passing mark of 15 out of 20. The duration of the test is around 30 minutes.
Test Day Requirements:
It is mandatory to carry all the original documents, including immigration documents, passport, and photo ID when you plan to take the exam. Some applicants may need to attend an interview with a citizenship judge, lasting 15 to 30 minutes.
Note: Minors (under 18 years) are exempt from the test.
3. Language Proficiency
Applicants aged 18 to 54 must prove proficiency in English or French by submitting one of the following:
-
Results of the English proficiency from an approved third-party test.
-
Transcripts or diplomas from secondary or post-secondary education in English or French.
Evidence of achieving Canadian Level Benchmark (CLB) 4 or higher in specific government language programs.
4. Citizenship Ceremony
Upon passing the test, you will attend a citizenship ceremony. In this ceremony, you will receive your Canadian citizenship Certificate and you will be entitled as a Canadian citizen.
