Bringing Your Loved One to Canada

If you’re a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for Canadian permanent residency. The Canadian government typically processes spousal sponsorship applications within 12 months.

Eligibility to Sponsor

To sponsor your partner, you must be:

  • 18 years or older

  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident

  • Living in Canada (or planning to return after sponsorship)

  • Financially stable and not receiving social assistance (except for disability)

Sponsorship Requirements

You’ll need to commit to supporting your spouse or partner financially for three years, covering basic needs like housing, food, and medical expenses. No minimum income requirement exists, but the applicant must demonstrate financial stability.

Who Can You Sponsor?

You can sponsor:

  • Spouse: Legally married

  • Common-law Partner: Lived together for at least 12 months in a marriage-like relationship

  • Conjugal Partner: In a committed relationship for at least 12 months with barriers preventing cohabitation

Application Process
  1. Gather Your Documents: Download the application package from the government website.

  2. Pay Fees: Total fees are $1,290 CAD, with additional fees for dependent children or Quebec residents.

  3. Submit the Application: Follow the instructions in the guide.

  4. Provide Proof: Show your relationship is genuine with photos, joint documents, and more.

Outland vs. Inland Sponsorship
  • Outland Sponsorship: For couples where the sponsored person lives outside Canada.

  • Inland Sponsorship: For couples living together in Canada. The sponsored common-law partner can easily apply for an Open Work Permit.
