Guide to Applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada

Are you interested in working in Canada after completing your studies in Canada? The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a valuable opportunity provided by the Canadian government, allowing international graduates to work in Canada and gain important professional experience. Below is a concise guide on how to apply for the PGWP.

What is a PGWP?

The PGWP is an open work permit designed for international students who have graduated from eligible Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). It enables you to work with any employer in Canada, providing you with the essential experience needed to support your application for permanent residency in Canada.

Eligibility Criteria for a Post-Graduate Work Permit
  • Completion of an Eligible Program: You must have completed a program of at least 8 months at a recognized DLI.

  • Full-Time Enrollment: You should have maintained full-time status throughout your academic sessions, with certain exemptions available for disruptions caused by the pandemic.

  • Required Documents: You will need to submit your official transcript and a completion letter from your DLI.

  • Type of Institution: You must have studied at a public or accredited private post-secondary institution or a private school with degree-granting authority.

Note: Starting in September 2024, eligibility criteria for some programs may change.

PGWP Validity
  • Study Programs shorter than 8 Months: Not eligible for a PGWP.

  • Programs of 8 Months to Less Than 2 Years: The PGWP will be valid for the same duration as your program.

  • Programs of 2 Years or More: The PGWP will be valid for 3 years.

  • Master’s Programs Under 2 Years: Generally, PGWPs for these programs are valid for 2 years, though recent updates may extend this to 3 years for certain cases.

Application Deadline

You must apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving your transcript and completion letter. If your study permit expires before you receive these documents, you can apply for a visitor record to extend your stay or submit your PGWP application from outside Canada.

Required Documents
  • Official Completion Letter: Issued by your DLI confirming the completion of your program.

  • Official Transcript: Also provided by your DLI.
