Canada holds one of the most open citizenship policies around the globe, enabling individuals to be eligible for citizenship every year. To qualify for Canadian citizenship, you must meet specific residency requirements, demonstrate specific language proficiency in English or French, and maintain a clean criminal record.

Eligibility requirements to apply for Canada Citizenship

Canadian citizenship is a dream for many Canada permanent residents, and it is important to understand the process and eligibility criteria for the same.

The eligibility criterion for Canadian Citizenship is to hold permanent resident status in Canada. Your Permanent Residence (PR) card does not have to be valid at the time of your application; expired PR cards are applicable for the application procedure. It is of utmost importance that you are not under review for immigration or fraud, subject to a removal order, or have any unfulfilled conditions related to your Canada PR status, or incomplete medical exams.

Additionally, individuals between the ages of 18 and 54 need to prove their language proficiency in English or French at a Canadian Language Benchmarks 4 (CLB) or higher.

Canada Citizenship Application Test

You must have been a resident of Canada for a minimum of three years; a total of 1,095 days in the last five years before applying for the citizenship application. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) advises applicants with more than 1,095 days to ensure accurate calculations. Time spent in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before gaining permanent residency can count towards this requirement, with each day counting as half a day, up to a maximum of 365 days.

The 30-minute test includes multiple-choice and true/false questions and can be taken in English or French. A minimum score of 15 out of 20 is required to qualify for the exam. The test covers topics such as the rights and responsibilities of Canadians, as well as Canada's history, geography, economy, government, laws, and symbols.
